Disabled user's activities being deleted

I disabled a few reps in CRM 2011 that are no longer with my company and when I did, it erased all of their activities under the accounts they previously owned, almost like they never existed. How can I get those back and prevent that from happening in the future? Also, in a short amount of time, we will be transitioning to CRM 2015, will this be an issue then as well?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
