Workflow fails due to SLA

We have a workflow which is failing with the error message below.

Plugin Trace:

	Sync workflow 'SLAs - XXXX' terminated with error 'An unexpected error occurred.'

Error Message:

Unhandled Exception: Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.InvalidPluginExecutionException: An unexpected error occurred.


There are workflows triggering off the Case although the error seems to point the finger at the hidden SLA workflow.  

We are On Premise (v 8.1.1.1005).

Are we looking for a hotfix or is this likely to be something conflicting like a SYNC workflow?  There are no custom Plugins in this system.

If this is a known issue that will be solved by going to 8.2 or installing a small patch then we can look at that.  Seems difficult to isolate if one workflow is conflicting sometimes!
