Duplicate tracked appointments after upgrade

Hello!  I have looked high and low on Google and cannot find an answer to our issue.

Users have Office 2013 32-bit and CRM 2011 32-bit with Update Roll-up 16.  To make CRM appointments, users go into Outlook calendars, make the appointment, and click "Track".  Everything appears in Outlook and CRM and works as it should.

We recently decided that we want to upgrade everyone to Office 2016 x64 and CRM 2011 x64 with UR 18.  In our test environment, this works great on Windows 10 so we moved forward with an upgrade to production.

  • We chose one of our users for the first product upgrade and did the following:
    • Uninstalled CRM 2011 x32
    • Uninstalled Office 2013 x32
    • Cleaned up remaining registry entries and file folders
    • Installed Office 2016 x64
    • Logged in to Outlook and create the user profile
    • Install CRM 2011 x64
    • Install CRM Update Rollup 18
    • Install CRM language pack

When I logged into Outlook, I setup CRM like we always have.  Everything looked okay.  I clicked "Go Offline" and clicked "Go Online" as was outlined in our test plan.  It worked.  But at that time we noticed that some, not all, appointments were duplicating.  Mostly old appointments.  Here are my questions:

  1. Was the duplication due to going Offline/Online?  I'm not sure because the duplicates could have been happening before that, but I hadn't noticed.
  2. I found an article that I thought might help that said before you do an upgrade like this, go into CRM > Options > Sync > Outlook Filters and deactivate all the filters and then do the upgrade.  The issue there is, by deactivating the filters and sync'ing, the expected result would have been for the tracked Outlook appointments to disappear - but they didn't.  They are still there.  Why aren't they being removed?

I'm confused by this and I'm not really sure what the problem or the fix is.  I haven't done this upgrade to anyone else's computer because I want to see if I can find a fix before rolling it out any further.  Thank you!
