What does the Synchronisation process actually do when Outlook starts up?

I am trying to better understand the synchronisation process between CRM & Outlook, in particular what the process is when Outlook first starts up.

I am aware of how the Outlook filters work and how items can be manually tracked from Outlook>CRM.

My specific question is that when Outlook first loads sometimes the message stating “Synchronizing your CRM data” appears and saying that this process may take up to 10 minutes per organisation.

Does anyone know which data this is referring to? My understanding is that this would be CRM data, either new data or changes to existing data that is determined by the Outlook filters.

I tested this by modifying all the CRM contacts that synchronise with Outlook, I then opened Outlook and received the message as above – “Synchronizing your CRM data”. Once this had completed I checked for changes in the contact records in Outlook – the changes HAD NOT come through, they only came through once I ran a manual synchronise.

I am trying to establish what this process actually does in the background and whether there is way to turn it off so that Outlook becomes available sooner.

Thanks, David
