Bad subject name allowed in Convert to Case

I'm looking at the process to convert a phone call to a case.  OOTB there's a field for Subject.  If I just type in any word in there (i.e. not a real subject), and then just click "Convert", then a new case gets created without any subject, since the one I put in wasn't real.

If I were to click elsewhere in this window before clicking Convert, I will then see the red X showing me my subject isn't correct.  But that doesn't show up (or at least not noticeably) if I click directly on Convert.

I can't find any way to edit this popup directly, so I thought that if I made the Subject field required on the case, then maybe this would demand a real subject when I clicked Convert, so I'd see that what I entered wasn't correct and give me the opportunity to enter a correct one before continuing.  But again, it just goes to the case with an empty subject line.

Is there any other way to address this?
