CRM Workflow Process Activity Count not including activities from quick campaigns

In CRM, I am using a workflow to capture the activity count for leads - by assigning the value of a custom field (Activity Count) to the process- activity count value. I am doing this on activity creation, it as also available as on-demand. Whenever I add an activity directly to a lead, the count increments perfectly. However, if I create a quick campaign and send out an activity to leads in a marketing list - the activity count does not increment even if I run the workflow on demand. When I look at a lead, in their activities section, the activities are present but it looks like the the workflow - process- activity count does not recognize these. Has anyone ran into this, know a possible solution for this, have a suggestion for an alternative of what could be going wrong, or know of a different strategy for capturing the TOTAL activity count for a lead.
